Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away medley that she performed at the CMA Awards is beyond my favorite performance to date, for several reasons: In 2013, after becoming a multi-platinum, record breaking, trend-setting artist, Carrie had the peak of her career, to date. She out-sold, performed, and out-toured every artist in the Country music genre. In 2012, she released her debut single, Good Girl, from album four and it sky rocketed to number one, becoming the fastest rising single of her career. Later on, in 2012, she released the album Blown Away, it became her fourth, consecutive number one album. Carrie had spawned three other chart topping singles, the title track and power ballad, Blown Away, the ever so vengeful Two Black Cadillacs, and See You Again, the heartfelt and emotion filled song that reminds everyone that there are no goodbyes. Good Girl, Blown Away, and Two Black Cadillacs all reached a Platinum certification, while See You Again received a Gold certification by the RIAA. Her success didn’t stop there, Carrie toured overseas, in London, Sydney and other international cities, selling out historic venues such as The Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House. She then brought her Blown Away Tour to America and Canada, complete with a 22 song set-list and over 100 stops across the nation. The Blown Away Tour grossed over $50 million, making it one of the top grossing tours and it also made her the top touring female artist at the time. All while doing so, she was able to donate over $1 to the American Red Cross thanks to the tour. With high demand, a Blown Away Tour Live DVD was released and to no surprise it was certified Gold in no less than a month! But wait… THERE’S MORE. Carrie Underwood earned her spot as the new Sunday Night Football on NBC opener, this gets broadcasted to millions of people, EVERY WEEK. She even co-hosted the CMA awards for the 7th straight time. So now you’re asking, she’s done it all… but you’re wrong. Underwood, took on the legendary leading role of Maria von Trapp in NBC’s The Sound of Music Live, which brought the story of the von Trapp family to life on national television. A record breaking, 18 million people tuned into this special airing, making Carrie Underwood the most talked about celebrity of 2013. At the 47th Annual CMA Awards, Carrie Underwood received a very disappointing three nominations, Female Vocalist, Album of the year, and Music Video of the Year. She was missing from Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and most importantly, Entertainer of the Year. After working so hard all of 2012 and 2013 she gets only three nominations. THREE. She had a point to prove and did she prove it all right. Carrie Underwood walked out onto that stage and she performed, not one, not two or three, but FOUR. Four of her -number one- singles in the past year, in a medley form. Each word, verse, and note were sung with attitude, power, precision, and did I mention my favorite? The evil glares. She walked onto that stage, knowing how hard she had worked, knowing she swept the floor with everyone who stood in her way, knowing she deserved more than what she was credited for. She walked onto that stage making me an incredibly proud fan. After, her final string of notes, the lights grew dim, her performance was over. No one stood up, not even her closest fellow artists. Not even the one she allowed to open for her on her tour. The disappointment on her face absolutely shattered my heart. She deserved that standing ovation more than ever, in that moment. The reason this performance is my favorite is because no matter how many people kicked her down she got up, gave the performance of her life, showed the entire music industry exactly what she has done and exactly what she is capable of. Carrie always prevails, she is resilient. She only comes back bigger and stronger. I hope country music can handle what she’s throwing next. I have a feeling it won’t be small pebbles.
